Happy Father’s Day

Here’s to sleeping in, boating with your boy, laughing at your wife’s water-skiing attempts and lots of hugs and kisses.

We had a lovely time in Vermont this weekend…lots of eating, water-skiing and a decent amount of lying around. Perfect.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and pops out there. Wish you were here, Daddy.

M.I.A.

Hello. It feels like an eternity since I posted, although technically it was only last Friday. I must say, being on the Game can have a detrimental effect on food preparation (not to mention consumption). For the last 3-1/2 weeks, I’ve been subsisting on a lot of Greek yogurt, almonds and cheese, which doesn’t actually sound like a healthy diet, now that I write that down. Of course, I’ve been drinking tons of water, exercising six (six!!) days a week and eating all kinds of veggies, but the fact is, I’m not really cut out for this whole “restraint” thing. Or let’s just say it doesn’t come naturally to me. I am a woman of whims and whim-type behavior just gets you into trouble when you need to control your food intake.

Having said that, I’ve been remarkably good…haven’t cheated even once! Of course, on the Game, you get one meal and one whole day off to eat like a Survivor contestant who’s won some food challenge (is that show even still on?). The weird thing is that when those days roll around, you’re so focused on making your weight for the week and getting all the points you can, that you don’t really want to go hog-wild. It’s weird. I was discussing it with Janice, the nutter who roped me into this madness, and we agreed that it’s part competitive spirit and part not wanting to let your teammates down. I suppose the idea of this whole approach is that you are learning to eat in a healthier way and that’s what’s going to stick with you even when you’re not playing the Game.

Anyway, that’s where I’ve been food-wise. I find that I’m falling back on the same three or four  super-healthy dishes that I know, but I also am starting to rethink some recipes that I have and how to make them Game-friendly. In fact, I’m working on what would normally be considered a very unhealthy dish and will post soon with what I hope will be the successful result.

There’s only so much you can do with tofu.

Springtime Snow

Really? It’s spring and we’re still getting snow? Um, no. Sorry, I’m over this. Especially after a 70º day last Friday. It’s just cruel — not to mention all the lovely little buds of iris and daffodil that are being frozen to death. Boo.

And we have a hound under the weather. Loo is depressed. He wants spring to be here too.

Pier 25

If you live in Manhattan or are coming for a visit, Hudson River Park is a required stop. And now, Pier 25 has just opened. It’s just off the West Side Highway at North Moore Street and according to the press release, it’s the longest pier in the Hudson River. Who knew?

Anyway, the kid and I checked it out this morning, and it’s awesome. In addition to a great kids park, replete with climbing walls, sand boxes and the essential-in-NYC-summers water park, there’s also a skate park, putt-putt course, community docks, volleyball courts and a snack bar (opening in Spring 2011).

I must say I’m pleased as I have a rather soft spot for Pier 25. Many, many years ago, my friend Jill and I used to come down to this pier and hang out in rickety old Adirondack chairs at this dilapidated two-story shack thing at the end of the pier (I can’t believe I found this photo!).

It wasn’t much to look at, but the view and the breeze (and the conversation, of course) was what we were there for. It was one of my favorite secret New York spots and now, even though it’s not the same (and not a secret anymore), it’s open and there are nice chairs in the same place where those Adirondack chairs used to be.

As the French say, “Le plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.”

Have a great weekend, y’all.

Sugar Crash

Wow. Halloween on a Sunday is a dangerous thing. This was the hombrecito‘s first real exposure to American Halloween and it started on Thursday with a school party, another party on Friday and then the actual day on Sunday. This was also the first time he’s had candy really and in sort of insane (for him) quantities.

There was a point where he was literally bouncing around the couch, the floor, screaming at the top of his lungs…a little scary but amusing as well!

I think the cutest thing was that when we went trick-or-treating in our building, he kept trying to give candy to the people answering their doors. Classic.

Hope you’re all coming down from the sugar high and managed to sneak a few pieces from your kids’ stash (or maybe they were generous and shared)! Or better yet, head over to Smitten Kitchen and check out these. I’m lucky that my MIL is from Ohio, so I’ve had these. They’re insane. Let’s keep the sugar madness going…Christmas cookies are just around the corner, people.
