Happy Father’s Day

Here’s to sleeping in, boating with your boy, laughing at your wife’s water-skiing attempts and lots of hugs and kisses.

We had a lovely time in Vermont this weekend…lots of eating, water-skiing and a decent amount of lying around. Perfect.

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads and pops out there. Wish you were here, Daddy.

Staycation, Part Deux

Hello friends, sorry for the longer-than-intended delay. This heat is forcing us out of doors and into our gorgeous local parks, all filled with fantastic water features like spraying elephants and sneaky dumping buckets. Plus, I’m still reveling in relaxation mode from our amazing weekend “away” — all the way up to Spring Street and the Trump Soho*!

Ryan surprised us on Saturday morning and off we went with friends to lounge at the pool, drink $17 piña coladas, snuggle in the super-soft bed and generally lay about. So fantastic!

Although by Monday morning, G was ready to go, saying, “Let’s go to our other house now.” And man, was that kid happy to see his toys. And it was nice to be home for me too. Back to reality, but still feeling relaxed and happy.

Hope you all had a great holiday weekend! Stay cool…

* Hey, it has an outdoor pool. Don’t hold it against us!

24 hours at The Surrey

This weekend we celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary at The Surrey, a lovely and relaxing hotel on the Upper East Side. We were steps from the Met, fantastic shops and a gorgeous rooftop garden, but more importantly, we had some much-needed time to ourselves. We took advantage of room service (courtesy of Café Boulud, the in-house restaurant and where we lunched the following afternoon on mushroom velouté, pan-seared flounder and ravioli with burrata foam), watched movies in bed (what a luxury, especially with the snacks I smuggled in, which still didn’t stop Ryan from raiding the mini-bar for gummi bears) and even managed to squeeze in a morning run through Central Park, all of which added up to an amazing 24-hour getaway.

Service was impeccable, yet warm; the room was chic, yet cozy; and we came back downtown feeling like we’d just visited another city (it really is another world on the upper east side)!

So, have you ever had a staycation? What did you do (or not do)? What’s your favorite way to celebrate your anniversaries (keeping in mind this is, ahem, a family blog)? Inquiring minds wanna know…

Happy Mother’s Day

I hosted my book club the other night and couldn’t resist filling the apartment with the peonies that are finally available (mixed with ranunculus and some little green pop of a flower that I can’t remember the name of). They’re my absolute favorite flower — so fragrant and lush. And they remind me not only of my wedding day (5 years next weekend!), but also my childhood home, where we had two bushes (one white and one magenta) growing outside our kitchen window. The smell wafting in the windows on a warm spring evening was so magical and held the promise of even warmer endless summer days.

Recipes to come (and the French theme is a hint), but first a sneak peek at the menu:

  • Lillet & soda with a twist of lime and lots of French wine
  • Cheeses, Niçoise olives and cornichons
  • Shaved Fennel, Apple & Parmesan Salad
  • Boeuf Bourguignon with Roasted Rosemary Potatoes
  • Chocolate Mousse

Consider these blooms my Mother’s Day gift to all you mamas out there. Hope you have a lovely day with your families!

Here Here!

Congratulations to the happy couple, HRH the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge!

Did you get up at the crack o’ dawn to take in the festivities (or did you cheat and DVR it like me)? Did you don a fascinator (shout-out to Nadia and the British crew in BsAs!)? Have a cup of tea? Were there tears (I must admit, I shed a few — I always cry at weddings, and I also couldn’t help but think about how proud Diana would’ve been; I’ll save my Princess Diana funeral story for another time).

In celebration, I give you this gift (although a vintage Aston Martin wouldn’t be too shabby either).

*sigh* I love weddings.
